Company Timeline
1904 - Harry and Sarah started their business as a salvage yard on Elkhart Avenue in downtown Elkhart, Indiana. In the beginning, they recycled things such as metals, paper, and junk cars.
1930’s – Harry Burnstine passed away in 1931. Sarah Burnstine led the company, while the Burnstine’s two sons, Marvin and Raymond, left college to come home to assist her in running the family business. During this period, our Company added new lines selling glass and mirror, new and used auto parts, tires, appliances, and electrical parts.
1940’s – Our Company helped to support the World War II effort by gathering scrap metals that were ultimately recycled and used for war supplies. With the increasing demand for travel trailers, our company began sourcing and supplying hard-to-find parts for this industry.
1950’s – The demand for the salvage business was declining. The Elkhart Junk Company name was changed to Burnstine’s and our business became a full retail store selling new appliances, jewelry, hardware, sporting goods, toys, guns, bicycles, etc. We also had a full automotive service center.
1960’s - Marvin’s son, Harry Burnstine (our current CEO), joined the company full-time.
1970’s – Sarah Burnstine passed away. Burnstine’s endured another name change to Burnstine's Distributing Corporation as we closed the retail store and focused on being a distribution center for the Recreational Vehicle (RV), Mobile Home (MH), Marine, and Specialty Vehicle markets.
1980’s – Along with the entire RV/MH industry, Burnstine’s experienced significant growth and expansion during this period. We were proud to be a primary supplier to many of the existing and developing RV/MH manufacturers.
1990’s – Raymond and Marvin Burnstine passed away. Harry Burnstine officially accepted the title of President. Sue Burnstine, Harry’s wife, also took an active role in running the Company and helped to revitalize the spirit of Burnstine’s. Unfortunately, Sue succumbed to cancer in 1998. This was a major loss to both the Burnstine family and to Burnstine’s Distributing. Harry and Sue’s daughters, Christy and Sarah Burnstine joined the company making Burnstine's Distributing a fourth generation company.
2000’s - Christy and Sarah partnered with Harry as owners of Burnstine’s and now oversee all of the functions within the organization. In 2004, a monumental year for Burnstine's Distributing, we celebrated our 100th year in business. Our Company moved from downtown Elkhart on Elkhart Avenue to the new Elkhart East Complex near C.R. 17 on the east side of Elkhart. Our new facility is much larger housing 63,000 square feet in the warehouse and 10,000 square feet of office space. We have purchased additional land to accommodate the future growth and expansion. In 2008, Burnstine's Distributing Corporation launches a new website with the focus of providing information, products and support to enhance the experience of our customers and ultimately the end user of the products.
